Victoria BC Accommodations Located Outside the Downtown Core

This page highlights Victoria BC accommodations that are located outside the downtown core in the neighbourhoods of Fairfield, Rockland and Oak Bay.

If you want a quiet, neighbourhood feel then these lodging options could be perfect for you. With the exception of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel which is a luxury purpose-built hotel overlooking the ocean (and recently ranked as one of the best in all of Victoria and Vancouver by US News) the other 3 are stately historic properties nestled in some of the oldest neighbourhoods of Victoria.

Abbeymoore Manor

Abbeymoore Manor is a bed and breakfast located in the beautiful Rockland neighbourhood of Victoria. Guests of Abbeymoore Manor enjoy convenient access to nearby venues of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the historic Craigdarroch Castle, Ross Bay Cemetery and Government House.

Government House is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor and is where dignitaries and royals stay when in town. Tours of the house and gardens are on pause due to COVID and some ongoing renovations however guests are welcome to a self-guided walk around the grounds. Government House is home to acres of meticulously manicured lawns that are free to visit daily from dusk to dawn. It is within walking distance to Abbeymoore Manor however there is also free parking available onsite. Check their website for details.

Policies

Because the Abbeymoore is a small, privately run bed and breakfast, you should be aware of some of the policies that are unlike larger hotel chains.

  • Prices quoted are based on 2 people. Depending on the room you choose, up to 4 additional people may be accommodated at a rate of $45 per person, per night.
  • Deposits are required at the time of reservations. If your stay is up to 4 nights, they require payment equal to 1 night stay. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to your arrival.
  • If your stay is 5 nights or longer, Abbeymoore requires a 50% deposit at the time of reservation with the balance payable 21 days prior to your arrival.
  • If you need to cancel there will be a $30 administration fee. If you cancel prior to full payment being made (see above) you will get your deposit back minus the $30 admin fee.
  • Abbeymoore recommends you book through a credit card that has trip cancellation insurance or you work with a travel agent to secure the appropriate insurance in the event of a late cancellation.
  • Guests are expected to stay the full length they have booked for. There is no refund for guests who leave early.
  • The Manor is 100% smoke free.
  • Small, friendly dogs are welcome in two of the suites at a fee of $30 per night however they are not allowed on the furniture. A cleaning fee and/or damage fee may be charged to the credit card on file if there is any evidence of doggy misbehaviour. Dogs are also not allowed to be left alone anywhere on the premises (including inside the room).

Guest Comments

Overall, guests of Abbeymoore Manor have positive things to say about the cleanliness of the rooms and grounds, comfy beds and professional, friendly staff. Guests were pleased with the quality of breakfast pre-COVID however they don't seem quite as impressed with the current offerings. The location of the Manor is in a quiet, safe neighbourhood but individual rooms may not be as sound proof as you get in a hotel. There is a television downstairs in the sitting room however there are none in the sleeping rooms.

Abigail's Hotel

Abigails Hotel is housed in a 1930's Tudor Mansion conveniently located just on the edge of town, close to numerous sites and amenities.  It could just as easily be included in my listing of downtown hotels but the character and charm of Abigail's could be lost in such a long list. Guests at Abigail's Hotel may be particularly interested in visiting Christ Church Cathedral, the Royal BC MuseumBeacon Hill Park, the Parliament Buildings or Victoria's famed Inner Harbour. With a great walkability score in the downtown area, there is nothing located in the city centre that is "too far" to walk from Abigail's Hotel.

Abigails is an urban heritage property that does not have any rooms with ocean or mountain views. It is also without an elevator however guests with mobility issues can be accommodated in a room on the lobby level of the main house. The remaining rooms require guests to walk up to 4 flights of stairs to their room. They do have baggage assistance available on a seasonal basis. And apparently the bed sheets are so popular they sell them in their gift shop!

There are no cooking facilities within the rooms and there is no onsite restaurant. With this location however you will find numerous award-winning restaurants all within an easy walk. Check out some of our favourite restaurants in Victoria here.

Amenities at Abigails Hotel

  • Full breakfast
  • Free WiFi
  • Fireplaces in some rooms
  • 24-hour business centre
  • Onsite library
  • Televisions in each room
  • Coffee/tea in a common area
  • Free parking (this can result in significant savings over other downtown Victoria hotels)

Policies

  • Prices quoted are based on 2 people. Each additional guest is $30 per night.
  • You have to be at least 21 years of age to reserve a room.
  • A credit card is required at the time of reservation however you are not charged until you check in.
  • If a cancellation is required, Abigail's requests you provide at least 7 days notice,
  • No pets except licensed service dogs.
  • There is no smoking anywhere on the property. Violations will result in a $200 penalty plus additional charges may be incurred if remediation is required due to smoking.

Guest Comments

Overall the majority of guests give Abigails Hotel a rating of excellent. They raved about the homemade cookies on check-in, the delicious breakfast and complimentary daily snacks. The charming property was well maintained and staff were friendly and helpful.

Auberge Victoria

Enjoy a welcoming home away from home atmosphere at Auberge Victoria.

Auberge Victoria was once the groom's cottage for Craigdarroch Castle and was formerly known as The Postern Gate Inn. It boasts well-appointed suites in a home setting. The property is managed by the owners. If you are looking for the hustle and bustle of downtown, this is not the location for you. Auberge is located in a quiet, residential neighbourhood for those seeking rest and relaxation. That definitely doesn't mean you are in the middle of nowhere though! Guests at Auberge enjoy nearby attractions such as the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Craigdarroch Castle. And for a beautiful stroll through well-manicured gardens be sure to add nearby Government House to your list of must-sees while in Victoria

For nightlife, the Inner Harbour and downtown shopping you are just a scenic 10-15 minute walk away. The idyllic location of Auberge Victoria makes it one to consider for your next visit to Victoria.

For accessibility purposes, note that there are two steps to get into the house and may be more steps depending on the suite. There are no elevators at Auberge Victoria.

Guest Comments

Overall guests note that the property is clean and well maintained with friendly, helpful hosts. They like the privacy of the suites, quiet residential neighbourhood and the close proximity to areas such as Cook Street Village. Some guests cautioned about the steep ladder to the sleeping loft in the cottage and parking was a challenge for some also.

That's it for this listing of Victoria BC accommodations in the neighbourhoods of Fairfield, Rockland and Oak Bay. I will be adding a full review of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel soon so please come back to check.
